Disability activists' conceptions of disability:

an analysis of underlying theoretical models

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the congruence between the conception of disability of a group of counselors for the rights of people with disabilities in a Brazilian city, and the four theoretical models of disability most widespread in the literature. On the theoretical bases of social psychology, the medical, social, anthropological, and neurodiversity models were considered. The qualitative method of content analysis was used. Thus, from the results, a wide predominance of the social model of disability was observed. The need for recognition of humanity and citizenship of people with disabilities by society. In addition to awareness of the disadvantages imposed on people with disabilities, even though considerable advances are recognized.
