Abstract

In Brazil, the number of elective cesarean sections has been increasing, extrapolating the recommendations by the World Health Organization. There are also increasing reports of obstetric violence. On the other hand, the movement for humanized childbirth and discussions about the humanization of care for women and babies are also expanding. The objective of this article is to understand how such mechanisms operate in childbirth scenes and how the movement for humanized childbirth has been constituting a line of escape and resistance in the face of this scenario of violence and subjection. Based on the Foucauldian perspective, especially on the concepts of biopolitics and biopower, the article opens ways to think about the ethical-political implication of psychology in this context.
