Abstract

Violence against women (VAW) is present in several Brazilian religious segments. In this bias, the study investigated the relationship between VCM and religion from women's experiences. The research had a qualitative-analytical character. Interviews were conducted with six women who experienced a context of domestic violence, self-identified as evangelicals and attended Pentecostal or Neo-Pentecostal churches. The analysis of the information was based on the historical-dialectical materialist perspective. It was identified that religion is one of the factors that ensure the hierarchization of male and female roles and the submission of women. Moreover, it contributes to the maintenance of the violent relationship and can be a barrier to denunciation. Paradoxically, religion can also be a help, a way to deal with the psychological and physical sufferings of VAW.
