Authors

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the meanings about participation in the creation and implementation of a Municipal Rights Council for disabled people, with an emphasis on the transformative power resulting from this process.  The information was obtained from semi-structured interviews conducted with nine people who participated in the creation and implementation of the Council and analyzed based on the analysis of the meaning processes. The research was based on the dialogue between the Ethical-Political Psychology proposed by Sawaia and the emancipatory perspective of Disability Studies. The results indicated that the process of creation and implementation of the Rights Council contributed to: the appropriation of the field of Disability Studies; knowledge of disability rights laws; criticism about assistentialists and objectifying practices of disability; transformations in the subjectivity of people with disabilities and their constitution as political persons in the struggle for social justice.
