Abstract

Abstract

Analyze motivations and regret that voters associate to their votes in the 2018 presidential election, electronic questionnaires were sent, between 04/30/21 and 05/17/2021, to 376 Brazilians. The results indicated a low percentage of regretting voters. The “vote against” was the main reason for the choice in the 2nd round of 2018. Regarding regret, disappointment prevailed: 30% of Bolsonaro voters, although disappointed with his government, do not regret. The “not regretting” was explained by the high religious identification; by the level of moral conservatism and traditionalism; by the Far-Right position; by the perception of a communist threat; by the belief that a military regime is not a threat and, mainly, by the distrust of the STF. It is concluded that the psychology of regret has important contributions to make in the long and urgent journey of improving democracy in Brazil.
