The National Movement of Homeless Population in the Northeast region:
a study about the organizational strength of its leaders
Abstract
The collective actions of social movements are mediated by the leaders through dialogue with the bases and the possibility of building public policies for vulnerable populations, among them, homeless people. Although the literature indicates that these people have difficulties in social organization, in 2005, the National Movement of the Street Population emerged. Since then, the MNPR has expanded and is currently present in 18 states of the federation. In the Northeast, it is present in 4 states on a consolidated basis and has been articulated to be implemented in the other 5 states. Therefore, the objective of this work was to understand the process of formation of new leaders for the National Movement of the Homeless Population in this region. Thus, we identified that the action of the leaders to strengthen the organization in the region is guided by the rescue of the historical memory of the Movement's social struggle.
