THE SOCIAL MOVEMENT OF NEURODIVERSITY AND AUTISTIC POLITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS
Abstract
Neurodiversity is the idea that autism is a neurological difference that is part of every autistic person's identity. The term is also used to designate the social movement, led by autistic people, that defends this concept. Its activists define the autism spectrum as a condition rather than a disorder. This scientific article studies the phenomenon from the point of view of Political Psychology using the Analytical Model of Political Consciousness proposed by Salvador Sandoval, which examines the psychopolitical aspects of this social movements from 7 dimensions: Collective Identity; Beliefs, Values and Expectations About Society; Collective Interests; Political Effectiveness; Feelings in Respect to Opponents; Goals and Set of Collective Actions and Willing to Act Collectively. The Brazilian Association Action for the Rights of Autistic People (ABRAÇA) activities, led by autistic people and adhering to the idea of neurodiversity, are also analyzed here.
