On the actuality of Lígia Assumpção Amaral

Interrogating ableism to cripple the “psy” field

Authors

Abstract

This work proposes a (re)reading of Lígia Amaral’s contributions, a female psychologist with disabilities. From the discussion on how “disability” is understood, it is proposed to retake contributions from Disability Studies and from the crip theory to interrogate ableist discourses and practices in the “psy” field. In the 1990s, Lígia Amaral already punctuated the production of what she calls “ideal type” from positions of privilege/domination, which already calls for the category “disability” as a social marker of difference. From the resumption of his contributions, always in dialogue with other fields of knowledge, it is possible to broaden the discussion of disability as a social category of analysis, in order to cripple the “psy” field through the problematization of its articulation from a pathological perspective as well as through the commitment to confronting ableism in our practices and theories as psy professionals.
