Homophobia on existential-phenomenological psychological literature:

an integrative review

Authors

Abstract

Given the historical context of change in the way homosexuality is seen in the sciences, this article is an integrative review of the phenomenological-existential psychological literature on homophobia. Articles published in Portuguese and English were searched in Portal CAPES, SciELO, LILACS, PePSIC and APA PsycInfo databases. Initially, 178 publications were obtained. By exclusion criteria, 15 articles remained, all in a qualitative method and 14 in English. As a result, it was observed that the selected articles address: 1) psychotherapy with LGB clients, highlighting the role of psychotherapy in the elaboration of suffering; 2) phenomenological-existential explorations of the experiences of LGB individuals, with emphasis on the suffering of these individuals; and 3) theories or criticisms on the origin of sexual orientation in a phenomenological-existential perspective, which conceptually deals little with homophobia, especially without a critical appreciation of its impact on the formation of sexual orientations.
