Work and precariousness: experiences of men deprived of their liberty

Abstract

This article aims to find outboththe meaning of work for individuals deprived of liberty in aprison institution for men located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul andtheirrelations to precarious work. This qualitative study with an exploratory-descriptive design was carried out in a prison institution for men in Rio Grande do Sul.For data collection, a focus group technique was used. Twenty-seven men deprived of their liberty who worked in a sewing project participated in the study. The groups’ data were recorded, transcribed and submitted to content analysis.The results showed that the meaning of work was associated with survival and remission of sentence, with no potential to subsidize reintegration into the labor market. It was concluded that prison labor policies need to bereset, especially regarding health and education of people deprived of their liberty.
