Abstract

This study aimed to discuss the experiences of transgender people and travestis in accessing public restrooms. We used thematic oral history to produce data, conducting interviews with five transgender and/or travesti people. We interpreted such data by critical discourse analysis. The experiences of transgender people and travestis in bathrooms permeate debates about ethical-political suffering and the inclusion/exclusion dialectic embodied in the notion of passability; symbols that constitute a central category to determine gender and authorize the transitability of bodies in social spaces and understand bathrooms in paradoxical, contingent, and paradigmatic terms.
