Abstract

The year 2022 was chosen by the UN as the international year of artisanal fisheries to focus on the importance of the sector in meeting the objectives of the 2030 Agenda. One of the Agenda’s guidelines is the achievement of equity and gender equality. Based on interviews carried out for a documentary (2018) about artisanal fishing in Região dos Lagos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), we present, under the lens of Psychosociology, the memories, achievements and perspectives of local fishing women on: 1) the territory, memories, affections and knowledge, 2) gender relations; 3) current activities. We found that they currently recognize themselves as artisanal fishermen. This self-denomination and assent have had repercussions, since their ancestors, in the multiple dimensions of their participation in fishing and currently contributes to the search for gender equity.
