In the first half of the 1950s, Michel Foucault’s (1926–1984) theoretical interest centered mainly on psychology and psychopathology. Among the writings of this period, we can highlight the introduction to the French translation of Traum und Existenz by Ludwig Binswanger (1881–1966), as well as his first book, Maladie mentale et personnalité (1954). In the course Binswanger et l’analyse existentielle, Foucault carries out a rigorous examination of Daseinsanalyse, comparing it to the approaches of psychiatry, psychology and phenomenology regarding mental illness. Therefore, based on the aforementioned course and the aforementioned introduction, this article seeks to present and define the central theses of Daseinsanalysis, as addressed by Foucault, with an emphasis on his critique of Binswanger’s interpretation of dreams. Thus, we will resort to both the analysis and presentation of certain concepts of Heideggerian philosophy and Freudian psychoanalysis, insofar as both dialogue with the analysis idealized by Binswanger.
