Person, en-counter and presence:
person-centered approach before alterity

We aim to deepen a reflection about person, meeting and presence, terms used by Carl Rogers. Initially, we argued that Rogers didn’t conceptualize such terms and that they express deeper psychological ideas. Then, we demonstrate how the person’s idea goes through the phases of Rogerian thought in his conception of human nature and self-actualization tendency. Posteriorly, we tensioned this idea from some criticisms based on the Peter Schmid and other humanists. Then, we worked the en-counter notion and presence as theoretical elements that allow us to rethink the person idea beyond its substantial dimension, approaching a relational and dialogical sphere that emphasizes difference as a constituent of become a person process. We conclude that advancing on the theme allows us to understand the individualistic solo that Rogers thought and to recognize the substantial and relational dimensions that show a fruitful tension between being and becoming a person.
