Working From Home: Perceptions of Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of Brazilian workers (N = 1.096) regarding the approach of working from home (WFH) during the COVID-19 pandemic. An exploratory quantitative research study was conducted in which data collection was managed through an online survey. Sociodemographic and labor aspects were investigated and the Satisfaction With Life scale, Work Satisfaction questionnaire, and World Health Organization Quality of Life-bref (WHOQOL-bref) were applied. Home office benefits identified through the survey included an increase in flexibility and availability of schedules, autonomy, and solidarity between coworkers. Harmful aspects indicated were increased work hours, interruptions, isolation, decreased feeling of
belonging, and of quality of communications. Higher levels of education, fixed-term employment contracts, support for childcare and the option of working in an isolated space were linked to better averages on the evaluation scale. The results of this study support the existing literature, and the importance of promoting programs focused on employee health.
