Decent and Meaningful Work: Effects on Workers’ Mental Health

Abstract
Psychosocial risk factors refer to working conditions that, when unfavorable, can compromise the mental health of workers. On the other hand, there are factors that can be protective, enhancing psychological well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the constructs of Meaning of Work and Decent Work on the mental health of workers by assessing the mediating effect of these constructs in relation to existing psychosocial risk factors in a sample of 330 Brazilian professionals who completed an electronic form consisting of the Socio-Demographic Occupational Questionnaire, Decent Work Scale, Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, Work and Meaning Inventory, and Self-Report Questionnaire. The analysis of descriptive statistics, correlations between variables, and Structural Equation Modeling indicated that the constructs exerted a partial mediating effect on mental suffering, particularly due to factors related to autonomy, violence, and satisfactory working conditions. Contributions for future studies and practical applicability were outlined.
