Adaptation of the Stigma Consciousness Questionnaire for Women for Security Workers

Abstract

Stigma awareness is a psychological construct that refers to an individual's expectation of being labeled by the group to which they belong, which can produce negative cognitive and behavioral effects. This study adapted the Stigma Consciousness Questionnaire for Women to the Brazilian context with female professionals working in public and private security, an area predominantly occupied by male workers. A total of 386 women from the five geographic regions of Brazil participated in the study. The participants' scores were analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The results revealed that the factor structures of two oblique and hierarchical factors adjusted very well to the empirical data and presented adequate internal consistency coefficients. It is concluded that evidence of validity and reliability was produced for the Brazilian version of the measure, which may be useful for research and for creating interventions that promote women's well-beings.
