Work and Risks of Illness of Community Health Workers

Authors

Abstract

Some forms of work organization can be harmful to the worker's health. Research has highlighted the negative effects of the work of community health workers (CHWs) on the physical and mental health of these professionals. This article analyzes the risk of illness related to the work of CHWs, through the application of the Work and Illness Risk Inventory (ITRA). This is a cross-sectional study carried out with 675 CHWs from Montes Claros-MG. The indices for the variables of work context and human cost of work were moderate to critical. However, the indices for damage at work were satisfactory. It was demonstrated that a longer period of time working as an CHW is related to worse scores on the scales analyzed and the prevalence of critical scores was verified, indicating the need for occupational health measures in the short and medium term.
