Perceptions of Therapeutic Listening as a Mental Health Care Tool

Abstract

Since the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, mental health care in the country has undergone significant transformations, resulting in the consolidation of the Psychosocial Care model. The Psychosocial Care Network is composed of various services and points of care, including Primary Health Care (PHC) and the teams of Health Care Units. Mental health care in PHC occurs, among other strategies, through qualified listening, although there is still a lack of studies that explore therapeutic listening as a tool in mental health care. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify the perceptions of PHC professionals regarding listening in mental health care. This was a qualitative study with an exploratory and descriptive design. The results indicate that listening emerges as an important tool in mental health care and appears to align with the principles of psychosocial care and humanized care.

  • Guilherme Gonçalves Maynardes, Universidade Federal do Paraná

    Currently pursuing a Professional Master’s Degree in Family Health (PROFSAÚDE) at the Federal University of Paraná. Completed a medical residency in Family and Community Medicine at the Hospital de Clínicas of the Federal University of Paraná. Holds a medical degree from the Federal University of Paraná (2015). Worked as a general practitioner at the Curitiba State Foundation for Healthcare Assistance (FEAS) and at the Curitiba Municipal Government. Currently enrolled in a medical residency program in Psychiatry at Hospital Adauto Botelho.

  • Lucas Monteiro Pellá, Prefeitura Municipal de São José dos Pinhais

    Master’s degree in Public Health from UFPR (2023–2025). Postgraduate specialization in New Approaches in Mental Health from CENAT (2022–2023). Psychologist at the Health Department of São José dos Pinhais. Graduated from the Midwestern State University (UNICENTRO) (2014–2018). Served as a preceptor for the Multiprofessional Residency Program in Family Health in São José dos Pinhais (2021–2023) and for the technical training program Saúde com Agente (2023 and 2025). Has experience in mental health group management, health promotion initiatives, and qualitative research.

  • Deivisson Vianna Dantas dos Santos, Universidade Federal do Paraná

    Physician and psychiatrist, with a Master’s and Ph.D. in Public Health from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), including a sandwich period at the Université de Montréal (UnM). Father of Gael. Currently serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Vice Dean of the National PROFSAÚDE Network of Professional Master’s Programs in Family Health, board member of the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (ABRASCO), and permanent researcher in the graduate programs in Public Health and Family Health at UFPR. Worked in supervision and management across several healthcare services in Campinas, São Paulo (2005–2013), where he served as Municipal Mental Health Coordinator (2009–2011). He also coordinated the municipalization and restructuring of the Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS) in Curitiba, Paraná (2014–2017). Has experience in the fields of Mental Health in Primary Care, Psychosocial Rehabilitation for vulnerable populations, and Health Management, with more than 80 published articles and book chapters on these topics.

  • Sabrina Stefanello, Universidade Federal do Paraná

    Psychiatrist, with a Master’s and Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from the School of Medical Sciences at UNICAMP. Completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Public Health at the School of Medical Sciences at UNICAMP and another postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Montreal (Quebec, Canada). Has research experience at the interface between mental health and public health, focusing on suicide prevention, primary healthcare, and education. Currently serves as a professor at the Federal University of Paraná, member of the Center for Studies in Public Health (NESC), Coordinator of the Professional Master’s Program in Family Health at UFPR (a networked master’s program of Fiocruz and ABRASCO), and permanent faculty member of the Master’s Program in Public Health at UFPR. Mother of Gael since 2015.
