Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study one important tool for assessing the psychosocial factors underlying stress at work. The study of the Portuguese Karasek’s Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) version aims also to contribute to the discussion about the theoretical model (decision latitude's division in one or two dimensions) and the scale itself (adequacy of the psychological job demand's items).

Cronbach’s alpha indicates appropriate internal consistency for three scales and some problems for psychological job demands. The exploratory factor analysis found a four-factor model. The confirmatory analysis gave support to the four-factor structure but also to a five-factor structure, being the results of the latter slightly better.

The findings suggest that the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the JCQ are satisfactory, although further improvement is needed for the psychological job demands scale. The results gave some support to the theoretical decision latitude's division in two dimensions.
