Abstract

This text is an essay to elucidate the meaning of “hermeneutics” in the thought of Paul Ricoeur. The question admits different approaches whether we aim at the author's early works or his works from the more mature period. Another complication is that the hermeneutical task configured by Schleiermacher and later by Dithey was completely forgotten and a recovery only occurred in the 20th century with Heidegger, Gadamer and Ricoeur when phenomenology took on a hermeneutic method in these philosophers. For Ricoeur, the paradigmatic form is the hermeneutics of texts. We can say that hermeneutics intertwines the interpretation of oneself with the interpretation of the life-world mediated in texts that correlate the world of the text with the world of the reader. Hermeneutics is a dialogical practice with the text passing through phenomenology by targeting meaning genetically from the living original experience.
