Care and mental health at work in HIV/AIDS in a reference hospital in the Amazon

The study proposed to analyze the organization of work of health workers with HIV/AIDS patients; identify experiences of pleasure and psychological distress; investigate individual defense mechanisms and collective defensive strategies adopted. The method is exploratory and qualitative research, theoretically based on the Psychodynamics of Work. The analysis instruments were semi-structured and individual interviews with eight participating health professionals. The results highlight the organization of work with intense and exhausting workdays. Working conditions are deficient in physical structure, use of equipment and resources. Faced with psychological distress, workers use the individual defense mechanism of denial and collective defense strategies of rationalization. Pleasure and recognition are obtained through social contribution, gratitude from patients and family members, learning and support from the team. In the end, there are sensitive reflections and contributions about mental health in the work of HIV/AIDS, in the field of collective health.
