Women's psychological suffering from social expectations: a phenomenological-existential analysis

Modern women are still imprisoned by standards and roles that affect their mental health. The purpose of this study is to investigate how social expectations contribute to female psychological distress from the perspective of existential phenomenology. A qualitative exploratory systematic literature review was conducted in databases that compile bibliographies between 2009 and 2025, focusing on women and psychological distress from a phenomenological perspective. According to the results, women feel socially pressured in relation to their appearance, fulfillment of family roles, and performance at work, which leads them to experience distress, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy. The phenomenological-existential perspective provides a unique understanding of the female subjective experience, highlighting the experience and meaning attributed to suffering. Therefore, it is imperative to implement practices that encourage authenticity, freedom, and empowerment of women in order to reduce inequalities and strengthen women's mental health.
