Emotions and Emotion Regulation in University Managers' Decision-Making During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Authors

Abstract

This study aimed to understand the emotions and the mechanisms of emotion regulation strategies in university managers’ decision-making, specifically how emotions influenced their decision-making process during the COVID-19 pandemic and which emotion regulation strategies were mobilized to ensure institutional continuity. The research adopted semi-structured interviews with managers from a higher education institution who served during the pandemic. The results showed that uncertainty, the loss of loved ones, the responsibility of making impactful decisions, and additional emotional pressures were factors that influenced managers' emotions during the pandemic. The complexity and interaction between emotional factors and practical decisions were evident in this challenging context. The search for emotion regulation strategies and the support from their teams and institutional leadership were essential in coping with the emotional burden of decision-making.
