Abstract

The study aims to assess risks and illnesses related to the work environment and characterize a sample of southern region of Rio de Janeiro state (Brazil) bank employees. This research was quantitative, exploratory-descriptive, cross-sectional and used three scales from the Workplace Risk and Illness Inventory (ITRA – Assessment of the Work Context, Assessment of Work-Related Harm, and Indicators of Pleasure and Suffering at Work) and a sociodemographic and occupational questionnaire (QSDO). The study analyzed 658 participants with valid protocols. The results demonstrated increased risks related to work organization, excessive pressure, and socio-professional relationships. Critical or severe levels of pain, stress, burnout, and lack of recognition were also detected. Significant differences were highlighted between groups with different lengths of experience, areas of work, age groups, and type of bank (public or private). It was demonstrated, particularly at the organizational level, that actions aimed at effectively modifying work environments are needed to make them safe and healthy for bank employees.
