Neurodiversity and Work: An Umbrella Review

Neurodiversity has gained increasing attention in debates on contemporary work. This study aims to conduct an umbrella review of the scientific literature on neurodiversity in occupational contexts, identifying: the types of studies that have been conducted; the forms of neurodiversity addressed; and the available evidence. Searches were conducted in PsycNet, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, Redalyc, and BVS Saúde. Ten reviews focusing on adult workers, published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish within the previous five years met the inclusion criteria. Descriptive and qualitative approaches were most prevalent. Findings converged around three thematic domains: employers’ perceptions of neurodiversity; barriers and facilitators to inclusion and professional success; and workplace interventions and support strategies. Further research should expand the studied groups, incorporate sociodemographic variables, and employ mixed and longitudinal methods to strengthen the overall evidence base.
