Abstract

In this work, we seek to understand the experiences of coming out and homophobia in the city of Montes Claros-MG. We chose to adopt a qualitative approach. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with gay professionals in the municipality, followed by content analysis. Regarding coming out, the difficulty of separating public and private life in the interior of Minas Gerais stands out, which led most of the interviewees to reveal their sexual identity. However, this did not prevent them from suffering from homophobia at work, which was noticed in sarcastic and offensive comments, barriers imposed on work, difficulty in relationships, intimidation and discouragement from disclosure of sexual orientation, and being fired from the company. On the other hand, the interviewees perceive gains when they come out, such as a feeling of professional satisfaction and self-confidence, strengthening bonds with colleagues, improved work performance, and reconciling personal and professional life. Finally, the importance of measures that promote, in fact, the visibility, inclusion and recognition of non-heterosexual subjects is highlighted.
